The Cam Newton Effect
Over the past week, the most dominating news in sports has been about Auburn's quarterback Cam Newton. There are a couple of alleged stories that Cam Newton made his decision on what school to go to based of off money. One story in the news is that Newton's father said to a recruiter that Cam was going to the school that paid the most money. A second story is that Newton told a recruiter from Mississippi State that the money from Auburn was too much to turn down. Now with his image destroyed and his Heisman chances ruined because of all the negative attention, it's important to stop and think for a minute...... is this necessary? We are talking about an athlete who is a student first, being slain by the media for things that haven't been proven true. Instead of talking about how good he is doing on the field people would rather exploit him and talk about all the negative that is going on and the sad thing about it is; IT MAY NOT BE TRUE! If it isn't true a man's image, everything he worked hard to create about himself is destroyed because people wanted to jump to conclusions. Let this man go through the process of being investigated first. Then when it's over people can pass all the judgment they want. At the end of the day I feel like if he did receive money to go to school it's not a big deal, because he's not the first, he isn't going to be the last, and he isn't the only one. I also feel that college athletes should be paid because it's hard enough being a student, but when you’re a student athlete the difficulty enhances tremendously. So I say with all the money that the players are bringing in, they should be able to reap some of the benefits.

Do you think that Reggie Bush issue is bringing attention, undo attention to Newton? And there needs to be some way for student athletes to "work" between school, practice, conditioning, etc, there is not enough hours in the day for working as well.
ReplyDeleteyeah i think the reggie bush issue plays a big part in it because now the voters don't want to make the same mistake again. So they're going to be extra precautious. Yeah i don't think there is enough hours in a day for student athletes to work go to school and fullfil their duties on the field. I mean the NCAA signs multi million dollar contracts with tv stations. There should be enough money to go around to pay the athletes for their labor. What do you think? Do you think college athletes should be paid?
